Back in 1953 a young entrepreneur named Gordon Lamb began trading in Chesterfield, Derbyshire on a site that cost just £400. Gordon was the first person to start a Volkswagen retail dealership in the UK and he began with a stock of just six Volkswagen Beetles. Between 1953 and 1959 Volvo and DKW were handled and in 1959, ever the entrepreneur, Gordon became the first UK distributor for the Swedish car marque Saab. Eleven months later, a hundred Saabs had been sold.
The company continued to grow and many new franchises were added, some of which still remain in the company's portfolio. Today, the Gordon Lamb Group is proud to continue the tradition of being a family run business and is headed by the third generation of the Lamb family, Stephen Lamb. Stephen took over as CEO from his father, Richard Lamb in 2005. Richard was responsible for the rapid growth in the business throughout the eighties and nineties and still takes an active role today, as Chairman.
The company now represent five new car franchises and three additional franchised service centres across Chesterfield and Sheffield and employ over 250 local people with an annual turnover in excess of £90 million. The group sells 6000 cars and vans a year in addition to servicing around 30,000 vehicles.
"As the third generation into the business it is critical to me that we maintain our core values of offering excellent customer satisfaction with the most competitive prices around whilst embracing new technologies and initiatives that will improve not only the sustainability of the business but also to make it easier for our customers to do business with us."
"Indeed from the company's inception, right back in 1953, the company's ethos has always been to follow the same ground rules for success - to always give our customers what they want and deserve; a quality of service, reliability and of course, 'the best possible deal'. However, today we need to go even further than this to ensure we build on these good foundations and therefore offer our customers a better service than they expect."
"This is why we have recently invested over £250,000 in a new IT system to improve our internal systems and why we have opened a customer contact centre so that we can contact all of our customers personally at an appropriate time for them."
"We realise that without our customers little can be achieved. Indeed, our best asset is still our customers and we need to ensure that we always stay one step ahead of their needs, and indeed the competition, if we are to retain their trust and loyalty."
Gordon Lamb were the first VW dealer in the UK (a brave move after the war!) and later become the main Saab distributor for the North of England.
